Following The Footprints of Snow Leopard
DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1. Arrival / Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Ulgii, the westernmost city of Mongolia, where you will be welcomed by a Mongolian Outdoor Travel guide and transferred to your site in the neighboring province of Khovd (3 hours). After stretching your legs, we will continue to the mountain destination, where a welcome dinner will be served in a Mongolian ger, followed by a trip orientation. (Temporary ger camp; L, D)
Day 2.
After an early breakfast, we start the hike to the mountain destination (4-5 hours total hiking). In the afternoon, return to the ger camp to discuss the next day's plan and overnight in the gers. (Temporary ger camp; B, L, D)
Day 3-9.
Spend these seven full days in the mountain destination. The daily routine follows mountain trails with local herders and their livestock, with all attention focused on spotting the elusive snow leopard. The average elevation of 2,500 meters in the valley circles the mountain, and the snowy, shaded side of the mountain makes the trails slippery, with packed snow and rock boulders.
Each day, we start our hikes around 10 a.m. and return to base by 4:30-5 p.m. A packed lunch will be provided during hiking days. We will hike and explore different valleys each day, based on territorial markings, tracks, pugmarks, scats, etc. We will also set up motion sensor cameras in several valleys to use their data for our search.
Each ger is equipped with a stove fueled by coal and dung, folding beds with mattresses, and each guest will have three seasonal wide cotton sleeping bags. Facilities include a field WC with closure and seats, a wash sink, and buckets of hot water that are always available.
Every evening, enjoy dinner made by a local field cook and discuss the next day’s plan. Overnight in gers. Additionally, we will drive to Durgun Lake valley to spot Saiga Antelope and travel to Khas Us Lake to observe various shore and water birds. Both destinations are 2-5 hours from the base camp by car. (Temporary ger camp; B, L, D)
Day 10. Ulgii City
Early morning, we transfer back to Ulgii city for your return drive to Gorny Altai, with lunch on the way. Upon arrival in Ulgii, you will be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a downtown restaurant, followed by an overnight stay at the hotel. End of service. (Mediena Hotel; B, L, D)
